The Essence of Time: A Study in Post-Marxism

EssenceOfTime

Another essay for Social Matter. In this piece I discuss the neo-communist outfit Essence of Time, taking a look at the Russian group’s manifesto and discerning how so-called ‘radical left’ thinking is evolving in some respects, but remaining largely the same in others, anchored to failed ideas and incomplete versions of history that leave gaping open-ended questions. I had seen Essence of Time mentioned in quite a few articles on the new Russian nationalist landscape, so I felt it worth doing some investigative work, surprised to find a rather well-presented summation of where Marxism has gone since its glory days, and how it is struggling to stay true to its founding while also trying to appeal to those who recognized its defeat as a death-blow to the old discourse on what used to be left-illiberal topics.
